ECU Remapping

Diesel/Petrol Remapping
The most difficult concept to grasp for most people is that remapping is merely engine tuning, all thats being done is electronically rather than mechanically (as in the old days of carburetters and distributors). A chip is simply an electronic storage device which is located on a circuit board inside the E.C.U.(the Engine Control Unit). The chip contains values in a binary form which the E.C.U's main processor (another device on the same circuit board) can understand and use to control the engine.

Each value inside the chip is held in its own separate position (known as an 'address'), and when a car is remapped, what we are basically doing is altering the values at the groups of addresses that control fuelling, ignition timing and on turbo engines, turbo boost. These are known as maps, hence the often-used term 'remapping'. It is these maps which we massage in order to tune the engine.

Naturally, this is a complex and skilled operation. It requires experienced personnel who understand the hardware and software, and of course have the appropriate electronics qualifications in order to understand the procedures. Nowadays the technology is becoming even more complex. Gone are the days of the 28-pin plug in chip, a simple 8-bit device. We've experienced the occasional wake-up calls from chips soldered to the circuit board and with unusual sets of contents, and have now moved into territory which is definitely not for the faint hearted with modern engines which have EDC15, EDC16 and EDC17 E.C.U's. Not just new hardware on the outside but also some mind-boggling software on the inside. Luckily, Autoremap programmers have kept abreast of the technology, and the company has invested heavily in state of the art mapping software.

BMW MSS50/52/53/54 AlphaN ECU Remap

(for standard cars running with CSL style airboxes without MAF).

AlphaN is where the air mass sensors are no longer used. Normally if they are unplugged the car will run under a reduced power mode, overfuel and bring up an engine management light with generally poor drivability. Our AlphaN upgrade is where we further develop the programme so that the S54 engine will run flawlessly without the air mass sensors. The overall smoothness of the engine is further improved over our standard ECU remap with the low speed drivability and general connectivity with the engine vastly improved.

This upgrade incorporates all of the features and benefits of the standard software above which include the power increase.

Additional Information: There is no issue of over fuelling but it is essential that the lambda sensors are working correctly (this is essential even without AlphaN) and you keep your air filters reasonably clean (which most enthusiasts will) in order to pass emissions testing.

The MSS52/53/54 control uinit is fitted with a barometric pressure sensor and recieves inputs from other sensors (throttle position, lambda, intake air and coolant) to correctly calculate expected airflow and control fuelling.

Air mass sensors are used mainly for emissions purposes where manufacturers are required to setup their cars such that they will pass regulations under the most strigent conditions. For example, the cars will need to pass emissions tests before release with extremely continaminted oil with air filters which are almost blocked. Enthusiast drivers never allow such things to occur and therefore air mass sensors are not essential.

This upgrade will only be noticed upon cold start where the engine will have a higher speed by approximately 150rpm for the first 30 seconds.

AlphaN for the MSS52/53/54 control unit is also available in conjunction with all other features such as post cat lambda delete and custom remapping for any additional upgrades.

The development and advances in agricultural plant machinery over the past few years has been great and we are now seeing the majority of agricultural engines using the very latest in common rail injection technology. The truth is that agricultural machinery is the largest benefactor when it comes to releasing hidden power by recalibration of the ECU maps or management system. There are various ways to increase the power of the modern diesel engine. The huge array of tuning boxes, tuning modules, diesel chips, power boxes, ECU chips, serial uploads, downloads, remaps, hybrid turbos, turboboost alterations etc etc and then the options turn to analogue or digital, electronic or manual. It becomes confusing to say the least.

Remapping/chipping is increadibly quick and simple. In the majority of cases there is no need to change a chip or even open the ECU - the chip is reprogrammed via the easily accessible diagnostic port inside the cab.
